The Friends of the Juanita E. Thornton-Shepherd Park Library's twice-yearly used book sale is this weekend at the library, 7420 Georgia Ave. NW. Hours are:
Saturday, Oct. 26: 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Sunday, Oct. 27: 1-4 p.m.
Here's just a sampling of what we've got:
► A generous selection of food and cookbooks; we didn't have enough on hand to display in the spring.
► An assortment of humor books — too few to display in the spring.
► A big assortment of crime and mystery fiction, the likes of which we haven't seen in years.
► A more-than-fair number of romance novels, donations of which have been a rarity until now.
► Lots and lots of paperback fiction — the "pocket"-size paperback format.
► More books for youth readers than can fit on our cart. This includes a hefty supply of juvenile and young-adult fiction, including the dystopian novels that have proven so popular this century.
► Reference works galore!
► Foreign-language books and books about learning different languages.
We also had one donor contribute a variety of newspapers from 2008, all of which noted the election of Barack Obama as the first Black U.S. president. Separately, someone also donated the front section of the New York Times with its reportage on the assassination of Malcolm X. We've also filled boxes with titles of Black interest — but should be of interest to all.
Books ae just $1 EACH. Kids' titles, from learning-to-read books to young adult fiction, are just 50 CENTS EACH.
You can also join the Friends of the Library during the sale. Individual memberships start as low as $5!
Tarry not -- once the sale is over, all unsold books are going away. In any event, stop by. We'd love to see you!
