The Friends of Woodridge Library would like to invite all to attend a DC Reads event at Woodridge Library on Monday, Nov. 14th at 6:30 PM. We will be discussing the book The Other Wes Moore. Copies are available for checkout at the library and as an e-book download at http://dclibrary.org
About the book (review from Booklist):
*Starred Review* In 2000, Wes Moore had recently been named a Rhodes Scholar in his final year of college at Johns Hopkins University when he read a newspaper article about another Wes Moore who was on his way to prison. It turned out that the two of them had much in common, both young black men raised in inner-city neighborhoods by single mothers. Stunned by the similarities in their names and backgrounds and the differences in their ultimate fates, the author eventually contacted the other Wes Moore and began a long relationship. Moore visited his namesake in prison; he was serving a life sentence, convicted for his role in an armed robbery that resulted in the killing of an off-duty policeman. Growing up, both men were subject to the pitfalls of urban youth: racism, rebellion, violence, drug use, and dealing. The author examines eight years in the lives of both Wes Moores to explore the factors and choices that led one to a Rhodes scholarship, military service, and a White House fellowship, and the other to drug dealing, prison, and eventual conversion to the Muslim faith, with both sharing a gritty sense of realism about their pasts. Moore ends this haunting look at two lives with a call to action and a detailed resource guide.
Woodridge Library is at 1801 Hamlin St. (at Rhode Island Ave.). Refreshments will be served, and the event is free.
Officers of the Friends of the Woodridge Library (FWL) will be elected by majority vote of those present and eligible to vote at the next annual membership meeting to be held on Saturday, November 5, 2011 from 11am to 1pm at the Woodridge Library. The President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer shall be elected.
The nominee for President is Sharon Turner.
The nominee for Vice President is Joseph Harris.
The nominee for Secretary is JoEllen Anderson.
The nominee for Treasurer is Cassie Fernandez.
These nominees indicated their consent to serve at the last meeting of the FWL held earlier this month. Additional nominations may be made from the floor.
The next meeting of the FWL is scheduled for this Saturday, September 10 from 11am to 1pm at the Library.
We'll have a partial recap of the still ongoing DC Public Library Summer Reading Program and impressions of the Federation of Friends Citywide Book Sale Preview Event. We will also have a recap of our effort to give away back to school supplies as well as a progress report on the next Vocabulary Bee. We hope you can attend.
On a sad note we mourn the passing of Anna Wuertenberg, a former member of the FWL. In her honor we will donate $50 to the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

The next meeting of the FWL will be this Saturday, June 11 from 11am to 1pm at the library. We will discuss the results of our recent Vocabulary Bee as well as our participation in the Woodridge Fathers' Day Essay Contest and citywide Summer Reading Program. I will reach out to those who expressed an interest in joining our group at the recent Spring Book Sale. Please bring your ideas and thoughts about fund raising. Several people have approached me about having a small outside booksale on Saturdays.
Please try to attend and hope to see you there.
