The Mount Pleasant Youth Arts Fair returns in 2011

After a 1 year break, the Mount Pleasant Business Association is planning to once again sponsor a Youth Arts Fair in cooperation with the Friends of the Mount Pleasant Library in May 2011.

The event is still in the planning stages but we hope to host a reception for the Artists and their teachers in early May and for the artwork to be on display for the entire month of May. With the small size of the Interim Mount Pleasant Library, the planners are working with local businesses to display the artwork and support the reception as well.

Stay tuned for more details!

Edible Book Contest

Enter Your Delicious Version of a Favorite to Win

As part of DC Library’s Read-In, on Saturday, October 2, Mt. Pleasant Library is having an edible book contest! Edible books are food creations that look like books, tell the story of a book or make a joke about a book’s title.

If you think you’d like to enter our contest, sign up by calling 202-671-3125 or e-mailing polly.ross@dc.gov. Then create a family-friendly entry that’s 100% edible, and bring it into the library between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on October 2.

Special thanks to Dos Gringos Cafe for supporting our contest.

Save the date for Upcoming Library Events!

There are a number of different things happennig in the coming months that I hope you’ll plan to attend or volunteer to help with:

  1. Thursday, March 26, 2009, 6:30 – 8:00 pm (Mt Pleasant Library)
Community meeting on the Mount Pleasant Library Renovation Plans – We have been asked to supply refreshments for this meeting. This will be the fourth Community Meeting and the end of the 30 day “pause” called for by Councilmember Graham.
  2. Sunday, March 29, 2009, 1:00 – 5:00 pm (Mt Pleasant Library)
Friends Work Day – We need to get the book room in shape for the upcoming book sale so if everyone can come by Sunday afternoon, we’ll knock out the clutter in no time.
  3. Sunday, April 11, 2009, 1:00 – 5:00 pm (Mt Pleasant Library)
Spring Book Sale – We’ll have the book room open for our Spring Book Sale. We need volunteers to take money, assist shoppers, and set up and break down before and after the sale.
  4. Friday, April 24, 2009, 10:00 am – whenever (District Building, 14th and Penn, Rm 412)
We are all needed this year to testify for the District Library Budget. We’ll have details next week but we expect the Library to sustain deep cuts that could jeopardize the renovation, our interim location and library hours. If you can take the time, this is when we really need you!
  5. Wednesday, April 29, 2009, 6:00 – 8:00 pm (Mt Pleasant Library)
Youth Arts Fair Awards – This is our big night! We’ll kick off our Annual Youth Arts Fair with awards, refreshments, performances, and prixes from neighborhood business. Friends are needed to volunteer but it’s also the most fun we have together all year!
  6. Monday, May 11, 2009 – Postage costs rise to $.44
Between now and May 11, we need to write and distribute our annual letter to donors and neighbors. This year, we need to communicate the role we play in our community and the value their donations give to library patrons, staff, and the community. If anyone has the time and wants to take a shot at a first draft, it would be welcomed.

I hope to see all of you at one, some, or all of these upcoming events
